Why?
Most travel undertaken by people in Scotland is local in nature, yet the majority of these short trips are by car. It is our position that there is significant room, reason, desire and feasibility for change.
Active travel refers to an approach to travel and transport that focuses on physical activity (walking and cycling) as opposed to motorised and carbon-dependent means.
Walking and Cycling are considered the main modes of active travel. It is about promoting the notion that “human effort is an alternative fuel” and zero emissionvehicles (bicycles) have been around a long time, since the 1900s. – Scottish Government, Active travel.
The invention of the bicycle is credited to a Scot, Kirkpatrick MacMillan, from Dumfriesshire.
